What is cloud hosting in reality? The term 'cloud' seems to be quite modern in today's IT, World Wide Web and hosting jargon. Even so, just a few in fact are aware of what cloud hosting is. Perhaps it is a clever idea to educate yourself about cloud hosting services. To render a very lengthy story short, we will firstly tell you what cloud hosting is not.

1. Cloud Hosting is Not Confined to a Remote File Storage Only.

1. Supplying a remote file storage service, which comprises one disk storage appliance for all clients, does not convert any given web hosting company into an actual cloud hosting corporation.

The cPanel web hosting companies name the ability to provide remote file storage services a cloud hosting service. Up till now there is nothing bad about the cloud classification, but... we are talking about web hosting solutions, not remote file storage solutions for private or business needs. There's constantly one "but", isn't there? It's not sufficient to name a shared hosting service, driven by a single-server hosting platform, precisely like cPanel, a "cloud hosting" service. That's because the remaining pieces of the entire hosting platform must be functioning in precisely the same way - this does not apply solely to the remote data storage. The other services involved in the entire web hosting process also have to be remote, separated and "clouded". And that's quite hard. A very small number of web hosting vendors can really achieve it.

2. It Entails Domains, E-mail Box Accounts, Databases, FTPs, CPs, and so on.

Cloud hosting is not restricted to a remote file storage solely. We are talking about a hosting solution, serving numerous domains, sites, electronic mail accounts, and so on, right?

To name a hosting service a "cloud hosting" one demands a lot more than providing plainly remote disk storage mounts (or probably physical servers). The mail server(s) have to be dedicated solely to the e-mail connected services. Doing nothing else than these concrete assignments. There might be just one single or perhaps an entire group of electronic mail servers, based on the overall server load created. To have a genuine cloud hosting solution, the remote database servers should be performing as one, regardless of their actual quantity. Doing nothing else. The same goes for the clients' web hosting Control Panels, the FTP, and so on.

3. There are Cloud Domain Servers (DNSs) as well.

The DNSs (Domain Name Servers) of a genuine cloud hosting solutions provider will support multiple datacenter locations on different continents.

Here's an example of a DNS of an authentic cloud hosting provider:

dns1.humeinternet.com

dns2.humeinternet.com

If such a Domain Name Server is furnished by your web hosting plans provider, it's not a sure thing that there is a cloud web hosting platform in use, but you can definitely be confident when you notice a Domain Name Server like the one below:

dns658.hostgator.com

dns659.hostgator.com

that there isn't any cloud hosting platform. This sort of Domain Name Server plainly exhibits that the hosting platform in use is one-single-server based. Maybe it's cPanel. cPanel is a one-single-server hosting solution and maintains a market share of more than 98 percent. In cPanel's case, a single server handles all hosting services (web, electronic mail, DNS, databases, File Transfer Protocol, hosting CP(s), web files, etc.).

Remote File Storage - The Perverted Interpretation of Cloud Hosting.

So, a cloud hosting solution is not limited simply to a remote disk storage solution, as plenty of web hosting vendors wish it was. Sadly for them, if that was the case, most of the file hosting suppliers would have been classified as cloud hosting ones long ago! They are not categorized as such, because they plainly deliver file web hosting services, not cloud hosting services. The file hosting platform seems indeed very simple, in comparison with the web hosting platform. The remote file storage platform is not a cloud hosting platform. It cannot be, because it's simply one small component of the whole cloud web hosting platform. There's a lot more to be discovered in the cloud hosting platform: the web hosting CP cloud, the database clouds (MySQL, PostgreSQL), the Domain Name Server cloud, the FTP cloud, the email cloud and... in the not too distant future, possibly a few new clouds we currently are not informed about will emerge unexpectedly.
